Never Take Your Eye Off Your Original Goals.

Rescom Construction Joe McLaughlinA co-founder of Rescom Construction back in 1989, Joe McLaughlin retired in late December. Together with partner Tim Justice, Joe guided Rescom to become Greenville’s top tenant upfit and renovation specialist. Prior to his retirement, Joe reflected on his experiences as a business owner in this highly competitive field. As we transition into the new year, we hope these insights will inspire other business leaders as they look for tangible ways to solidify and make significant strides in 2025.

When you think to the most important lessons that you’ve learned from a business perspective, what comes to mind?

(JM) First, never take your eye off of your original goals. Second, you as a business owner are nothing without your people and your subcontractors. Our annual barbecue really drives the second point home. There were 130 people there, and we depend on each one to make all this happen.

During the formative years of Rescom, was there a person who had a great impact on the way you approached the business?

(JM) I’ve never thought of it this way, but it could have been 25 years ago when I hired John Caldwell. Before getting to know John, delegating didn’t come naturally to me. I tried to do everything, and everybody looked to me for all the answers. When that happens, it’s easy to get burned out and you feel like you don’t have any control of your life.

John gave me my life back. I learned how to lean on someone else. I began to realize that there’s at least that one person that I can delegate to and forget about it. Because I know John’s going to do it at least as well as I’m going do it. Maybe better.

It also builds trust within the company. Looking back, I realize you can’t possibly grow a company unless you learn trust.

Rescom Construction Joe McLaughlinWhat advice would you give someone with high goals for success in the construction industry?

(JM) First, never let anybody outwork you. That will always bring success.

Second, the shortest pencil is better than the longest memory.

Third, always stay humble. Always give God the credit.

What are your plans for retirement?

(JM) Spend more time with my granddaughter; spend more time with family; and spend more time in Pennsylvania with family up there, especially my 94-year-old mom.

Joe grew up in Bethlehem, PA, developed a passion for construction in high school and became the first graduate from Clemson with bachelor’s degrees in both Architecture and Construction. He joined Greenville-based U.S. Shelter Corp., where he met Tim, who was working in the company’s accounting department. Their friendship and complimentary business skills would become the basis of Rescom. Joe and Tim sold the business to Tyler McKee, Randy Moore and Jimmy Giorgi in 2019. Joe stayed on to help manage the transition. He retired from active work in 2024, but still serves as a consultant for the business.
